Addiction psychiatrist Dr. Calvin Stone joins Neighborhood Healthcare

Doctor of Osteopathy addition expands behavioral health department of non-profit

Escondido, Calif. (August 3, 2021) – Neighborhood Healthcare, a regional Federally Qualified Health Center providing a wide range of medical, dental, and behavioral health services, announced today that addiction psychiatrist Calvin Stone, D.O. recently joined its expanding behavioral health department.

The Doctor of Osteopathy became the first UC San Diego addiction psychiatry fellow in 2020 and trained under Neighborhood Healthcare’s Behavioral Health Director, Gabriel Rodarte, M.D.

“Joining Neighborhood Healthcare is a natural fit for me,” said Dr. Stone. “The healthcare professional and staff here are not just highly skilled in their particular disciplines, but also extraordinarily kind and team focused. They put patients first in everything they do. I’m also excited to continue working with other UC San Diego psychiatry fellows to enhance the understanding and treatments of addiction. This service is needed now more than ever. I’m looking forward to doing my part.”

Dr. Stone joins Neighborhood Healthcare’s behavioral health department as the organization seeks to expand these services, particularly in addiction recovery, given the projected exponential rise in fentanyl-related overdose deaths this year, according to San Diego County law enforcement officials

“We employ harm reduction principles in our practice where we combine behavioral health therapy with medications to treat substance use disorders,” said Dr. Rodarte. “Research shows that medications used in addiction therapies are safe and effective. We’re excited to have Dr. Stone join us in this effort.”

Before his fellowship at UC San Diego, Dr. Stone received his psychiatric training at the University of Utah. He graduated as a Doctor of Osteopathy from Midwestern University in 2016. Dr. Stone received several awards when he was in residency and med school and graduated in the top 10 percent of his medical school class. During his addiction psychiatry training, Dr. Stone worked at multiple sites, including a local methadone clinic, numerous Medication-Assisted Treatment programs, and the Veterans Administration.

Dr. Stone also possesses a long list of volunteer positions, including working with the underserved while in medical school and postgraduate training.
