Neighborhood Healthcare Receives Prebys Foundation Grant to Improve Access and Innovation in Care

Neighborhood Healthcare, a regional Federally Qualified Health Center providing a wide range of services, today announced that it received a grant of $250,000 for Health and Well-Being Innovations made possible through the Prebys Foundation’s over $4 million investment in community health across San Diego County.

The funding will support Neighborhood Healthcare’s Advanced Practitioner Training Academy (APTA). This 14-week program prepares newly graduated Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants to deliver team-based, high-quality, and patient-centered care in underserved communities.

“APTA is an important part of how we are responding to the nationwide physician shortage trends and the increasing complexity of care our patients require,” said Edgar Bulloch, MD, Associate Chief Medical Officer for Neighborhood Healthcare. “The program trains newly graduated Advanced Practice Providers (nurse practitioners and physician assistants) within a truly collaborative model where supervising physicians, preceptors, and mentors work side-by-side with them to build confidence, clinical judgment, and strong team relationships. Many of our APTA participants come from the communities we serve and understand the challenges our patients face, which strengthens trust and continuity. Ultimately, APTA helps ensure we have the skilled clinician workforce needed to meet our patients’ needs with high-quality, thoughtful care.”

The Prebys Foundation recently awarded grants to 23 trusted community clinics and health organizations across San Diego County — all dedicated to expanding access to healthcare and addressing health equity challenges.

“Community health clinics are the beating heart of San Diego’s care network,” said Grant Oliphant, CEO of the Prebys Foundation. “As policy shifts and funding cuts strain the safety net, these clinics are responding with courage, ingenuity, and a deep connection to the people they serve.”

This effort is part of United for San Diego, a collective initiative by the San Diego Foundation, Price Philanthropies, and the Prebys Foundation that mobilizes regional partners around a shared goal: protecting access to food, housing, and healthcare for all.
