Dr. Oliver Thomas, one of Neighborhood Healthcare’s founders, passed away this summer. For many of his associates and patients, Dr. Thomas is the model of what it means to be a physician leader and true friend.

Please join us in celebrating Dr. Thomas’ lifetime of service to his patients and 30 years of caring for Neighborhood Healthcare’s success and growth.

Affectionately known as “Ollie,” Dr. Thomas was responsible for bringing a community health center to Escondido. He was passionate that everyone who needed to see a doctor would get care regardless of their ability to pay for services.

In 1969, a social worker at the Escondido schools told Ollie that there were students who missed school because they were sick. They couldn’t afford to go to a doctor and he wanted to help.

Along with community volunteers, Dr. Thomas petitioned the Escondido City Council for the clinic to use city property which they rented for one dollar a year. He served as the medical director for the first two years while working full time at his family medical practice.

He asked local doctors to volunteer as he did. For many years Dr. Thomas devoted his energies to securing funding for the clinic from various sources. Due to his vision and efforts, we have a safety net of care for some of our most vulnerable neighbors in need.

Now, in his honor, your tribute gift can support Ollie’s lifelong passion. Your donation will help fund our future health center in Poway, California and generous donors Alan and Debbie Gold will match your gift dollar for dollar up to $250,000.

We know Ollie would be happy that you are helping “the clinic” keep up with the growing demand and continuing to keep his vision alive. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
