2007: Local family physician
awarded prestigious teaching honor. Neighborhood
Healthcare physician Julie J. Chuan, M.D., is
among a select group of physicians honored by
the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation
for her commitment to education in the field of
family medicine. Dr. Chuan was selected to receive
the 2007
Pfizer Teacher Development Award based
on her scholastic achievement, leadership qualities
and dedication to family medicine.

Opening Celebration. New Pediatrics and
Prenatal Health Center Will Serve 7,500 North
County Moms and Their Children.

2007: Neighborhood
Healthcare ~ Escondido offers prenatal care
including medical and educational classes. The
nonprofit community health center assists with
medical visits, health education, nutrition counseling,
ultrasound and non-stress tests, lab work, childbirth
classes and counseling services. Neighborhood
Healthcare is a comprehensive Perinatal Services
Provider for Medi-Cal patients. Health center
staff will help prepare applications for Medi-Cal
and Access to Infants and Mothers (AIM) insurance.
Neighborhood Healthcare ~ Escondido also accepts
private insurance and offers cash programs for
prenatal care and delivery at Palomar Pomerado
Hospital. Neighborhood Healthcare has three health
centers located in Escondido. For locations and

HEALTHCARE~EL CAJON PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL DAY
TO PREVENT TEEN PREGNANCY: Neighborhood Healthcare~El
Cajon and the San Diego Teen Parenting and Pregnancy
Prevention Coalition have agreed to help make
the 2007 National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy
a success. On May 2, 2007 representatives from
both agencies and student volunteers will distribute
pregnancy prevention and reproductive health information
at San Diego County schools. Hundreds of thousands
of teens nationwide are also expected to participate
in the Sixth Annual National Day to Prevent Teen
Pregnancy. The purpose of this day is to focus
on the importance of avoiding early pregnancy
and parenthood. Organized by the National Campaign,
the National Day has widespread support, including
National Day founding partner TeenPeople.com,
over 175 national organizations and media outlets
who serve as official National Day partners, and
financial support from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

HEALTHCARE~ESCONDIDO VOLUNTEER WINS BANK OF AMERICA
SCHOLARSHIP: Volunteers are a vital part of
Neighborhood Healthcare's success. They perform
a number of duties including helping to direct
patients, assisting with administrative tasks
and outreaching to the community. Neighborhood
Healthcare is proud to have a number of excellent
volunteers, including Tracy Han who worked with
the community health programs staff to organize
a health fair at Farr Elementary in Escondido.
This event reached provided health related information
to 157 people, including 35 uninsured residents
that are now being assisted with Healthy Families
and Medi-Cal enrollment. Tracy's service at Neighborhood
Healthcare was instrumental in her receiving numerous
honors, including the Gold Scout Gold Award and
the Bank of America Regional Scholarship. In August,
Tracy will attend Harvard University and hopes
to volunteer with Neighborhood Healthcare during
the summer holidays.

VOLUNTEERS
MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT NEIGHBORHOOD HEALTHCARE~EL
CAJON: Volunteers are a vital part of Neighborhood
Healthcare's success. They perform a number of
duties including helping to direct patients, assisting
with administrative tasks and outreaching to the
community. Neighborhood Healthcare is proud to
have a number of excellent volunteers, including
Nia Price who works with the health programs staff
and shadows medical providers in El Cajon. As
a recent graduate of the Department of Biology
at San Diego State University, Nia is hoping to
study public health in graduate school next year.
At Neighborhood Healthcare Nia has assisted in
teaching pregnancy prevention classes, conducted
HIV education outreach, and performed pregnancy
and urinalysis tests for patients. "I enjoy
working with the community and contributing to
this organization." Nia says, speaking about
her service at Neighborhood Healthcare. "I
want to work in this area and Neighborhood Healthcare
gives me a good opportunity."

HEALTHCARE NURSE NOMINATED AS HEALTHCARE HERO:
On April 18, 2007 at Sycuan Resort in El Cajon,
Neighborhood Healthcare Nurse Betty Reliford was
nominated as a Healthcare Hero by the Grossmont
Healthcare District. These awards go to healthcare
workers that go beyond their normal job duties
and provide volunteer service to improve the quality
of healthcare in East County. Betty has worked
at Neighborhood Healthcare for over seven years
and also serves the community in a variety of
volunteer roles.

HEALTHCARE~TEMECULA FUNDED BY THE SUSAN G. KOMEN
FOR THE CURE FOUNDATION: Neighborhood Healthcare~Temecula
was awarded funding by the Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation to continue the Breast Health
Care Access Project in the Temecula area. This
program provides outreach and clinical breast
exams for underserved women in the Temecula Valley
area. During the 2006 program year over 300 women
were given clinical breast exams and over 2000
people received cancer detection information.

HEALTHCARE~EL CAJON HOSTS OPEN HOUSE:
On February 9th Neighborhood Healthcare
held an open house at the El Cajon
Health Center. Nearly 150 people
showed to meet our medical staff
and learn more about our women's
health, adult medicine, and pediatric
services. There were also 67 free
dental screenings provided to school
age children, along with health
insurance enrollment assistance
and entertainment from the Aztec
Dance Troupe. The dental screenings
were much needed, considering it
is now state law that all children
receive an oral health assessment
before attending school. Care Drugs
Pharmacy and Health Net sponsored
the event, providing free food and
raffle prizes for attendees.

HEALTHCAREOFFERS FREE HEALTHY FAMILIES AND MEDI-CAL APPLICATION
ASSISTANCE: It is estimated that over eight million
of California's children are uninsured, most of whom are
eligible for some type of health insurance. Through a program
funded by the First 5 Commission of San Diego, Neighborhood
Healthcare is offering free Healthy Families and Medi-Cal
application assistance. Interested clients can visit our
health centers in El Cajon at 855 East Madison Avenue
or in Lakeside at 10039 Vine Street weekdays between
9am-5pm, or by appointment outside of working hours. Home
visits are also offered for clients without transportation.

HEALTHCARE CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS WITH PATIENTS:
Thanks to donations from the Target Corporation
and individual donors, Neighborhood Healthcare
provided patients with gifts during the holiday
season. Staff in Escondido and El Cajon gave teddy
bears, toys, and even a Christmas tree to patients.
As Kids Insurance Partners (KIP) clients the Amaya
family was selected to receive the donated tree.
The KIP Program, funded by the First 5 Commission
of San Diego, offers free Healthy Families and
Medi-Cal enrollment assistance to uninsured families.
The gifts are sure to brighten the holidays for
Neighborhood Healthcare patients.

NEIGHBORHOOD HEALTHCARE HONORED AT PHYSICIAN'S
GALA: Neighborhood Healthcare physicians were
recently honored at the 1st annual Palomar Pomerado
Health Physician's Gala held at the California
Center for the Arts in Escondido. At this October
9th ceremony, Drs. Dan Harrison, Julie Chuan,
Yassir Farrag, Yoo Chong, Glen Panzer, and Jim
Schultz received a variety of awards including
"Unit Physician of the Year" and the
"Quality Champion Award." The annual
PPH Physician Gala Awards recognize local physicians
for their leadership and outstanding work with
patients.

HEALTHCARE CENTERS PROVIDE DENTAL SCREENINGS FOR
THOSE IN NEED: Binational Health Week, an annual
event celebrating health and wellness between
the United States, Canada, and Mexico took place
earlier this month from October 6 to October 14.
Neighborhood Healthcare participated in the festivities
by hosting a dental screening event in Lakeside
and the annual Fall Festival in El Cajon with
more than 300 people in attendance. This year,
over one million individuals in the three nations
received health information and services from
community health centers like Neighborhood Healthcare.
